Dale Herigstad

Futurist & Innovator in Advanced New Media

Now living in London, Dale Herigstad spent 30 years in Hollywood as a Creative Director for motion graphics in TV and film.  His mission has been to apply the principles of rich media design to interactive experiences. He began designing interfaces for advanced Television more than 20 years ago, and was a founder of Schematic, which grew and merged with other digital agencies to form the global agency POSSIBLE Worldwide, where he led global teams in the role of Chief Interaction Officer.  He has specialised in the visualisation of future systems of navigation and media consumption, working with companies like Sony, Microsoft, Intel, EA Sports, Time Warner, BMW Group / DesignworksUSA, Cablevision, Orange Vallee and the BBC.

Dale has developed a unique spatial approach to navigation in various screen contexts. The work blurs the line between Television, Games and Web, a concept he calls "New Television".  He was a part of the research team that conceptualised digital experiences in the film “Minority Report,” and has been active in the development of gestural navigation.  As we enter the post screen era, and with advancements in stereo 3D projection and new forms of AR, information and design can occupy spaces.  Virtual space and place are the new frontiers of design.

Dale has an MFA from California Institute of the Arts, where in 1981 he taught the first course in Motion Graphics to be offered to designers in the United States.  He served on the founding advisory board of the digital content initiative at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, and also was an active participant in the development of advanced prototypes for Enhanced TV at the AFI for many years.  Dale has 4 Emmy awards.  See more.

In 2004, Livia was nominated as Delegate Administrator of the Lisbon Municipal Energy and Environment Agency, where she widened the scope of the Agency’s interaction with the city and focused on defining the energy environmental strategy with specific performance targets for the city, including efforts like the kick-off for the local electrical vehicle charging grid and the first secondary water supply for urban hygiene.  She was also elected councillor for the opposition for Lisbon Municipality in 2009 and contributed her expertise to the team of ex-Prime Minister Pedro Santana Lopes for several years. She became a member of the European Design Leadership Board in 2011 to contribute to the creation of the European Design Innovation Initiative and the report “Design for Growth and Prosperity."

Livia has been a member of the Lafarge Stakeholder Panel since 2005 and, in 2011, chaired the Lafarge Sustainable Construction Solutions Specifier Panel, focused on defining future sustainable construction solutions for the Mediterranean Climate Region.
